Compass Observation App (“the app”) is a celestial-navigation and compass-checking toolkit for deck officers, watchkeepers, yachtsmen and students of navigation. This policy explains how the app handles your information.
Data we process
All data you create in the app — positions, times, compass checks, sight reductions, deviation cards, logbook entries and generated reports — is stored locally on your device using on-device storage. None of it is sent to us or to any third party.
When you export a PDF deviation report or a CSV of your logbook, those files are written to your own device storage. The app does not upload them anywhere.
Data we collect
None. The app has no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and makes no network connections.
Permissions
The app requests certain device permissions, each used only on your device and only for the feature it serves:
- Location (optional): if you choose GPS entry, your position is read to compute bearings, altitudes and rise/set times. It is used only for the calculation and any logbook entry you choose to save, and never leaves your device. You can always enter your position manually instead.
- Camera (optional): used only for the AR sky mode, to overlay stars and planets on the live camera view. The camera feed is displayed in real time only — the app does not record, store or transmit photos or video.
- Sensors: the device compass, gyroscope and accelerometer orient the star dome and AR view. Sensor readings are processed live on the device and are not stored or transmitted.
- Files: accessed only when you choose to export a PDF report or CSV, solely for that action.
Data retention and deletion
Because all data is stored locally, you remain in full control. You can delete any logbook entry, reading or deviation card within the app, or remove all data by uninstalling the app.
Children's privacy
The app is intended for maritime professionals and students of navigation and is not directed at children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same URL with a new “Last updated” date.
